If it is you…

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. ~ Matthew 14:27-29, NASB

I am fascinated with this story of Peter walking on water. There is a lot that could be said about the incident that is recorded but I am stopped by five words, “Lord, if it is you…”

Jesus had already mentioned to the disciples that it was Him. Yet, for Peter, there was still some nagging doubt in the recesses of his mind. Why else would he say, “If it is you” to the Lord?

I don’t think less of Peter for the doubt. I certainly don’t think less of him for showing his humanity. If anything, I am encouraged. I am encouraged that a doubter can still find a place with Jesus. I am encouraged that someone who isn’t sure about what God is saying can ask for clarification.

Think about the command Jesus gave, “Come!”

What is he commanding Peter to come out to? Come where?

Jesus is telling Peter to come to Him out on the raging sea. Leave the safety of the boat. Come out above the treacherous waves, the surging storm.

There is much more to be said, but let’s leave it with this. When you face the storms of life, and you will face them, call out to Jesus. It’s okay to say, “Lord, if it is you, if you are out there in the midst, call me to come!”  Who better to ride the storms of life out with than the Master of the wind?

Be honest with him about your doubts and questions. If you need His reassurance, ask for it. He will answer. And when He does, accept it in faith and walk on water! Rise above the darkest storms and meet the one who controls them all!
