Best Foot Forward

My daughter had her first job interview recently. For her, it was both exciting and scary at the same time. She wanted to put her best foot forward and impress the interviewer. She wanted to him to see her as a good fit, a great candidate, a capable person for this job.

Her dad and I tried to prepare her the best we could. We gave her possible interview questions to consider, told her to be honest, ask questions…she really wanted this job! She doesn’t want to say the wrong thing to ruin her chances of getting hired. It’s a lot of pressure.

When you think about life, we all live like we are approaching an interview to a certain degree. We put on our smiles and put our “best foot forward.” In an effort to impress and move ahead, we prepare ourselves the best we can. We think through possible scenarios and interactions and decide how we might react. We want to look our best!

We want everything to be okay and want everyone to believe we are okay. We want to look good, be well-liked, feel loved, and impress others. In our efforts to fit in, we sacrifice our commitment to the Lord and we stray from following Him.

Why do we work so hard to fit into an already broken mold? Why do we want to be like everyone else? Jesus said the path is narrow and few find the road to life, yet broad is the path that leads to destruction and many find it (Matthew 7:13-14). If we are believers, why are we trying to find a place with all the people on the broad path? They are not like us and we are not to be like them!

Those on the broad path may think you are foolish, but don’t believe for a minute that they won’t notice you.  You may be the only Jesus that some people ever encounter. Live in such a way that you compel them to come over. Don’t try to fit in! Be who you are created to be in order to show others the way to true life.
