I recently planted some flowers outside. When you plant something, say a seed, it peeks out of the soil and the roots begin to grow down (firmly rooted) in the earth. The more the plant grows or is built up, the deeper the roots grow. When a storm comes, and they always do, the plant can stay strong if the roots are deep. The plant is established! Even when you buy a plant and replant it in the earth, it usually says in the instructions to keep moist until the roots are established (or take hold!) The same goes with believers.
Can I be honest? I am often in shock at what professing Christians will say.
- “I hope God will let me into heaven, I messed up big time.”
- “My boyfriend and I just got an apartment! Praise God for His blessings!”
- “God is the same in all religions, I don’t know why we fight about it.”
Yes, and more. These claim to be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. What is going on? Can they really be that confused?
Absolutely! I truly believe we live in an age of easy salvation (pray a prayer and you are good), but absolutely little to no teaching/discipleship to new believers. Just my opinion and observation. It frightens me, and it should frighten you.
Colossians 2:6-7
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.”
Colossians 2:6-7 has some key points:
First, if you have received Christ you are to walk in Him, in His ways, following His guidelines. No, we will not be perfect and we will make mistakes, but there needs to be effort. However, look at what it says clearly. Before you can walk in Him you have to be firmly rooted. Firmly rooted as in you have to understand the basics and take root. Roots provide what you need to grow (get built up) in Christ. This allows you to be established.
There is a progression listed in these verses. Rooted, built up, established, overflowing.
How do believers become established? It says, “just as you were instructed.” Where do we receive this instruction? We can find it in God’s Word, mentors, Pastors, Churches and fellow believers.
Being established in faith provides strength when the way gets tough. It keeps us from being tossed by every wind of doctrine. As a child of God you must, MUST, know what the Word of God says! Find a church that preaches truth, find a mentor to disciple you, find friends who know the Word, and be open to the tough discussions when you are straying. Be willing to hear someone tell you that you are acting, living, or going in opposition to the Word.
God bless you on your journey in Him to be firmly established!
